
Before you begin to build your robot, it is important to become familiar with the different Lego parts in the Mindstorms kit.

![]() ![]() ![]() Beams, bricks and plates are the structural components. Beams come in a variety of lengths and have holes in them to insert axles. Plates are flat pieces that also come in a variety of lengths and widths. |

Axles are used for gears and wheels. There are a variety of axle lengths from 2 Lego units long to 12 Lego units. |
| Bushings go on axles to hold them in place. Half bushings, which are also small pulleys, have more friction than the full bushings and provide a tighter grip. |

Connector pegs are inserted into the holes in beams. |
| There is a variety of tee fittings and elbows. These connect axles and connector pegs. |
